The new year is a chance for fresh beginnings and an opportunity to look at where you were last year and where you want to go. This can be an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming. One of the challenges I have each year is trying to decide what I need to do to get closer to my dream life. The good news is with a little bit of planning and a lot of action you can move closer to the life you really want to live.
These steps helped me!
1. Define Your Dream!
Before you start on your tiny house journey, decide what you want out of life. What does your dream life look like? If you can’t answer that, you can’t make it a reality. Dreaming big is what motivated me to downsize and move into my tiny home. It was a stepping stone for the dream life I am working towards.
My dream life includes settling close to the beach, with the opportunity to travel around the country seeing national parks and running half-marathons. My dream life is about having enough savings and passive income that I can choose when and how to work. Right now that dream involves me running a few of my own businesses, pursuing photography and spending lots of time on the water. It’s about prioritizing my money and time expenditures in a way that makes me feel alive and fulfilled.
This dream is what kept me motivated when I had doubts about my decision to downsize. Making sure you understand where you want to go will give you the ability to move forward with confidence and excitement.
2. Take Stock of Where You Are Starting From
Once you know what your dream looks like, figure out where you are starting from. Make sure you know what you need to accomplish to get to where you want to go. Part of achieving any goal is taking an honest look at what you need to change to get there. This can be a scary endeavor. It’s never fun realizing that we aren’t living the life we really want, but the good news is if we are honest about where we are starting from, we can figure out what we need to do get to where we really want to be.
When I started dreaming big, I realized I needed to change my spending habits, reduce my debt and make some changes in what I believed was possible. These were scary changes, but I knew if I really wanted my dream to become a reality, I had to make them. It meant being bold and taking action.
3. Make a List of What You Need to DO
Once you know where you are starting from, make a list of the things you need to do to move forward. It sounds easy, but this is the part that takes time and effort. It is relatively easy to dream big (if you give yourself permission) and we usually have a pretty good idea of where we are starting from. It’s getting from one point to the other that takes our energy and effort. These big things should make up your goals each year.
If you are at all like me, there may be a lot of ground to cover between where you are starting from and where you want to go. That’s okay, you just need to break down the goals into smaller chunks. Pick two or three goals to focus on at a time. Make a list of the things you need to do to move forward. Don’t try to do everything at once. You will get overwhelmed! Instead focus on the next step you need to take and then act!.
4. Act Today!
So what do you do with that awesome list you have? Take action! Don’t let your goals wait another year. Once you have your list, pick one thing each day or each week and spend some time crossing some of your tasks of the list. These don’t have to be gigantic steps. It might be doing research on where you want to park your tiny house, it might be calling builders to see if anyone has plans that fit your budget and design goals, or it may simply mean spending a little extra time making sure that tiny living is really going to get you where you want to go. It doesn’t matter what action you take, it just matters that you take action.
5. Act Again Tomorrow!
So why is it that most new years resolutions and goals are abandoned by February or March? It’s because we stop taking action. Don’t let your dreams slip away. Keep moving forward. It isn’t enough to start the year out strong. You need to take action again tomorrow and the next day.
Make a list each week and cross off your steps as you go. Get an accountability partner if you need. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take action. Do whatever you need to do to move forward. Just don’t dream, plan and sit…take action and start living the life you always imagined.
